Some of us, myself included, have decided to read more books in 2025. My New Year’s Resolution. As you are considering your list of must reads, let me tell you about 2 books that literally have the power to change your life.

Food, What The Heck Should I Eat? By Dr. Mark Hyman

The no-nonsense guide to achieving optimal weight and lifelong health

“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food” is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine. Whether this quote came from Hippocrates or not, this is a powerful statement. It speaks to the power of food.

Food has a language. When we eat the food, the nutrients “speak” to our cells, telling them what to do in order for our body to thrive. These nutrients are the key to detoxification, making energy, balancing hormones, and living a vibrant life.

Dr. Hyman addresses every food group you can imagine. He covers meat, poultry and eggs, milk and dairy, fish and seafood, vegetables, fruit, fats and oils, beans, grains, nuts and seeds, sugar and sweeteners and beverages. In each chapter he talks about myths, the science of the food, what experts got right and wrong, what you should and should not eat and why, and more. It is not only extremely educational, but very practical (put it into practice today) information.

If you have made a New Year’s Resolution to get healthy and/or lose weight – this is a good place to start!

Good Energy by Dr. Casey Means with Calley Means

The surprising connection between metabolism and limitless health

In this book Dr. Casey digs into how energy in the body is created. She explains the cell and mitochondria, where ATP (energy) is created in the body. When I talk about energy, I am not just referring to “feeling energetic”. Our body needs this ATP, energy, for every function in our body. Although this sounds technical, it is not. She explains it in a very reader friendly way. It is a basic understanding that we should all have in order to understand how to achieve health.

Dr. Casey helps the reader to understand how “bad energy” (why our body struggles to create ATP) results in illness such as autoimmune disease, chronic pain, inflammation, and the list goes on. And then how we can create “good energy” (how our body can produce more ATP) leading to vibrant health.

Educating Yourself

As a Functional Medicine Health Coach I spend a lot of time educating my clients. Having some basic understanding of how our body works and responds to our environment – stress, the food we eat, how well we sleep, and the toxins we come into contact with – is an important piece to achieving good health. Take the time to read these books and enjoy a Healthy 2025!
