PALMYRA, Va. — Firefly Fiber BroadbandSM, a wholly owned subsidiary of Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC), has launched a new community awareness initiative urging residents to think twice before pulling the trigger this hunting season.
With dove hunting underway, the company’s “Be a Good Neighbor” campaign reminds sportsmen that shooting at birds perched on power and fiber lines poses risks that extend far beyond the target. A single stray shot can snap a line, severing internet and utility service to hundreds of homes and businesses. Repair costs can run into the thousands, and outages can last hours or days.
“Fiber lines don’t just carry internet — they carry our neighbors’ ability to work, learn, and stay connected,” said Firefly Communications Manager Melissa Gay. “With our campaign, we’re asking the community to look out for one another by protecting this shared resource.”
The campaign highlights three main messages:
- Think Before You Aim — Shooting at power or fiber lines is both dangerous and illegal.
- Stay Connected — One damaged line can shut down an entire community’s internet and phone service, creating safety concerns for residents and public safety officials.
- Be a Good Neighbor — Respect the infrastructure that keeps friends, families, and businesses online.
To spread the word, Firefly is leveraging digital outreach, including email and social media, with reminders about the importance of protecting lines that make modern life possible.
“We’re grateful to live and work in a community that values connection,” said Gary Wood, Firefly President & CEO. “By being a good neighbor, we all win.”

Hi! I’m Jennifer Bailey and I partner with entrepreneurs who have massive ideas that could change the world. Most marketing is meaningless. Filled with empty promises, its only job is to bring in new traffic, new leads, and new customers. But I’ve drawn a line in the sand, and I’ve learned that marketing can do so much more than reach business goals and build profit. My methods give businesses the fire and soul they need to reach the right people, set the groundwork for sustainable relationships, and offer true value to the people on both the giving and receiving ends of marketing.
