Weekends at Lake Anna are synonymous with sun, waves, and leisure for many boaters. However, for Robert Thomas, owner of Lake Anna Marine Towing, these waters represent more than just recreation—they embody a mission to assist boaters with unexpected challenges.

Rob Thomas, known affectionately as Rob to friends and clients, spent nearly two years bringing his vision to life. His journey began with a dilapidated hull, barely recognizable and in dire need of repair. “When I first got the boat, it was in terrible shape,” Rob recalls. With determination and hands-on expertise, he transformed this wreck into a state-of-the-art towing vessel equipped with cutting-edge technology.

“My kids call it The Rubber Ducky,” Rob chuckles, referring to its original “road cone orange” color before reconstruction. “They always want to ride with me when I’m working.”

Although the orange hue was replaced with a more practical slate gray for better visibility and heat management, the playful “rubber ducky” theme endured. The boat features a large inflatable polyethylene rib that acts like a cushion, preventing damage to boats during rescues.

Rob’s vessel, originally a US Coast Guard tender, was purpose-built for towing and vessel assistance from the outset. “It was never a fishing boat; it’s a specialized, efficient, and safe towing boat,” he explains. The boat is equipped with top-of-the-line electronics for search and rescue, advanced sonar capabilities, and night vision for safe navigation after dark.

Affordability is a cornerstone of Rob’s service philosophy. “Offering affordable towing is crucial,” he emphasizes. “Boaters often face unexpected expenses, and affordability can make a big difference.” Despite prioritizing cost-effectiveness, Rob ensures that his service remains professional and of the highest quality, with no compromise on safety.

One of the standout features is a custom-built remote-controlled robot that delivers the tow cable, eliminating the need for traditional line throwing. Additionally, Rob’s boat is equipped with electric pumps to quickly remove water from distressed vessels, jump-start capabilities, and spare parts like fuel primer bulbs and fuses. These features often save boaters from the need for a tow, allowing them to get back to enjoying their day on the water.

Beyond basic towing, Rob has equipped his vessel with advanced technology including underwater cameras, lights, and a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) capable of 4K imaging in murky waters.

The impact of Lake Anna Marine Towing on the local community has been profound. Rob recounts a story of a customer who faced exorbitant repair costs from another dealer. Rob’s team was able to get her boat up and running for a fraction of the cost. “She was so happy,” Rob says. “I never ask for reviews, but people give them anyway. They’re really heartfelt and warm. I also really like helping people in a bad situation.”
