At the core of Louisa County Public Schools (LCPS) stands a figure whose dedication to education and community has shaped the lives of countless students and families for nearly three decades. Superintendent J. Douglas “Doug” Straley II is a cornerstone of leadership, inspiring everyone he touches with his commitment to the community.
Having been honored as Region V Superintendent of the Year for a second time this year, the first being in 2020, Straley’s approach is grounded in the belief that it is a collective strength; a team effort by the students, staff, parents and the wider community. With a remarkable tenure spanning 29 years within LCPS, Straley’s journey began long before his ascension to the role of Superintendent. A proud graduate of Louisa County High School, he embarked on his career in education with a deep-rooted desire to give back to the community that had nurtured him. His path led him through various roles, from teacher and coach at Louisa County Middle School to assistant principal at the High School, before ultimately assuming the mantle of Superintendent.
Reflecting on his journey, Straley speaks fondly of his diverse experiences within LCPS, where he taught subjects ranging from physics and English to special education. His passion for athletics and student development also saw him realize his dream position as Athletic Director, where he aimed not only to foster a spirit of competition but also to unite the community in celebration of student talents.
“As Superintendent, my mantra revolves around the concept of service and community,” Straley reflects. “It’s all about being able to serve my community.”
Under his leadership, the “#LouisaLeads” initiative emerged during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the importance of proactive leadership in ensuring students’ success amidst uncertainty. Today, the #LouisaLeads tagline is well known among the community at large, and is even used by the board of supervisors from time to time.
“It is the spirit of unity that has been pivotal in navigating challenges and achieving milestones,” he emphasizes.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Straley’s personal life reflects his unwavering dedication to family and community. With six children, including two adopted daughters from China, he and his wife Kate—a fellow educator and tech coach—embody the values of compassion and inclusivity both at home and within the broader community.
“I love my community. I love Louisa,” Straley says. “My belief is that I want our students to be able to experience and have the best possible experience in education.”
In essence, Straley’s legacy is one of service, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the betterment of Louisa County and its residents. His journey from student to Superintendent epitomizes the transformative power of education and the profound impact of an individual committed to serving others.
“I never wanted to do anything but the position that I was in (at the time), my pathway has taken me to different opportunities to serve,” he reflects. As Straley continues to lead with humility and passion, his influence extends far beyond the confines of the school walls, shaping the futures of generations to come. “What I want for LCPS and for our students and school division is for us to be able to leave us and go and lead the way.”
Hi! I’m Jennifer Bailey and I partner with entrepreneurs who have massive ideas that could change the world. Most marketing is meaningless. Filled with empty promises, its only job is to bring in new traffic, new leads, and new customers. But I’ve drawn a line in the sand, and I’ve learned that marketing can do so much more than reach business goals and build profit. My methods give businesses the fire and soul they need to reach the right people, set the groundwork for sustainable relationships, and offer true value to the people on both the giving and receiving ends of marketing.
