Local author Jennifer Carter has struck a chord with dog lovers across the region with the release of her debut book, The Unplanned Obstacle: From Injury to Triumph, A Canine Recovery Story. The inspiring memoir, which quickly became a local bestseller, shares the true story of how Carter helped her dog recover from a serious leg injury—without surgery.

When Carter’s mixed-breed dog, Luce, tore her cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), veterinarians recommended surgery. But Carter chose an alternative path. Through over 500 hours of hands-on care including massage, laser therapy, physical rehab, and nutrition changes, Luce regained her strength naturally.

Part how-to guide, part heartfelt tribute, the book challenges common assumptions about veterinary care and empowers pet owners to explore integrative healing options.

“People are often told surgery is the only answer,” Carter said. “I wanted to show there’s another way—one that focuses on trust, daily care, and the healing power of the human-animal bond.”

The Unplanned Obstacle achieved #1 Best Seller and #1 New Release status on Amazon. Carter will also be signing copies of the book at the 2025 Rehab Rover 2nd Annual Canicross and Trail Race in Gordonsville on October 4.
