The Lake Anna Civic Association (LACA) and Cutalong Golf Course invites the community to join them Monday, August 25th for the annual Kick the HAB Golf Tournament, with an 11:00 AM shotgun start.
This special event raises funds to fight Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in Lake Anna—caused by toxic cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae—that threaten both recreational use and the health of lake residents, visitors, pets, and wildlife.
Over the past few years, cyanobacteria outbreaks have become more frequent and dangerous. The primary fuel for these blooms is excess phosphorus in the water and sediment. These conditions not only cause unsightly discoloration and odor but can lead to gastrointestinal illness and even liver damage in humans and animals.
Fixing the issue is no small task. Experts estimate that fully remediating the phosphorus levels in Lake Anna will cost $13 to $15 million over five years. That’s why LACA, an all-volunteer organization, launched its “Kick the HAB” campaign—raising over $200,000 so far, thanks to the generosity of the community.
LACA’s Water Quality Committee has partnered with the Department of Environmental Quality, Department of Wildlife Resources, Old Dominion University, Virginia Tech, and Randolph-Macon College to test the lake every two weeks since 2020. This ongoing work involves training volunteers, collecting and analyzing water samples, and developing data-backed solutions.
Cutalong, Lake Anna’s premier golf course, has stepped up once again as a key partner in the fight. All proceeds from the August 25th tournament go directly toward monitoring, research, and mitigation of HABs.

Hi! I’m Jennifer Bailey and I partner with entrepreneurs who have massive ideas that could change the world. Most marketing is meaningless. Filled with empty promises, its only job is to bring in new traffic, new leads, and new customers. But I’ve drawn a line in the sand, and I’ve learned that marketing can do so much more than reach business goals and build profit. My methods give businesses the fire and soul they need to reach the right people, set the groundwork for sustainable relationships, and offer true value to the people on both the giving and receiving ends of marketing.
