Sometimes, our inner child and creative thoughts need an outlet all of their own. For these ladies, it has taken shape in the form of a she shed, a “chic shed” and a “she shop” in their backyards. These winning spaces are bursting at the seams with their own personality, representing an extension of the talents and hobbies of these local ladies. They draw their inspiration from not only enjoyable fun past-times crafting, but also business endeavors of everything beauty-related! Congratulations to our top three entries for the Show Us Your She Shed competition! Stay tuned for a tour of homes and sheds in early 2025!
Inspired to create your own shed? Transforming a basic shed into a functional, personalized space involves a few key steps. Start with insulation and climate control, ensuring the shed is usable year-round. Install electrical wiring for outlets, lighting, and possibly climate control systems. Cover the walls and ceiling with drywall or wood paneling, and choose durable flooring like vinyl or hardwood. Organize the space with built-in storage, and furnish it based on its intended purpose, whether a reading nook, crafting space, or office. Add warmth with rugs, curtains, and decor. Lastly, enhance the exterior with paint, landscaping, and a small deck!
Heather Fickes Creative Studio
“My She-Shed is more like my creative studio. I create wearable art, so there is a space for all the materials and doodads. I work on the floor so I can spread out, but I do have a huge table to work at if I choose. This building represents everything that I love. I keep my collection of wedding dresses (I’m working on a wedding accessory collection), fabric stash, vintage furs and clothes, plus a variety of mannequins and an inventory of eclectic accessories inside. It’s also where all the brainstorming and prep for upcoming Louisa Art Center crafting classes and art bus projects happens. Creativity sometimes can be messy – so it’s not always the most organized – but it’s a place where my imagination runs wild and it’s filled with things that inspire me. Plus no she shed is complete without a colorful rooster outside and a stripper pole in the middle.”
Heather Huddleston’s “Chic Shed”
“My beautiful ‘Chic Shed’ was created for my Beauty business! As a bridal hair and makeup artist, this shed is the bomb!”
Kelly Bladen’s “She Shop”
“I recycle discarded things into other things. It is messy, but it inspires me. If you listen closely, the things tell you what they want to be.”
