Thanks to the efforts of the Norton Network, a growing collective of local growers, winemakers, and advocates, this native varietal is finally getting the spotlight it deserves.

What’s So Special About Norton, Anyway?

For starters, Norton isn’t just any grape—it’s America’s native-born wine grape, with roots that dig deep into Virginia’s soil and history. Hardy, resilient, and packed with flavor, Norton has often been the underdog, overshadowed by European heavyweights. But that’s changing fast.

“Norton is a little rebellious, a little wild—but that’s what makes it exciting,” says Kenny White of Chateau MerrillAnne, one of the founding Norton members. “It’s bold, distinctive, and perfectly suited to Virginia’s terroir.”

With natural resistance to pests and fungi, Norton thrives with minimal intervention, making it a sustainable choice for eco-conscious vineyards. Its robust character delivers wines ranging from fruity rosés to spicy, full-bodied reds, ready to win over curious newcomers and seasoned wine lovers alike.

Close to Home: Where to Taste Norton Wines

Kicking off the season is the Virginia Norton Wine Festival on June 7 at Piedmont Meadows in Triangle, VA. Then, the Norton Network will continue with a series of pop-up tasting events through the summer, and wrapping with the inaugural Norton Wine Competition hosted by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.
