Lake Anna is about to see some of the much-anticipated growth that has been in discussion circles for years. Strategically designed to cater to the needs of the Lake Anna region, the upcoming Roundabout Plaza promises a high standard of construction and aesthetics. This town center features two one-story buildings with a central courtyard located off of 522 between the new roundabout on 208 and Chopping Rd, adjacent to Cardinal Home Center.
“The idea was to create a place where both kids and adults can enjoy, especially on days when the weather isn’t ideal for outdoor activities,” said Jon Koren, the owner and developer of the property.
Among the key tenants already secured in the much-anticipated Roundabout Plaza is The Lazy Parrot, a family-style sports bar that has long been a favorite in Charlottesville. The Lazy Parrot, along with an arcade, a bakery, and several offices, will be at the heart of this new community-centered hub. Tenants will also feature a gym and indoor pickleball courts.Kevin Kirby, owner of The Lazy Parrot, is excited about expanding to Lake Anna.
In an interview with The Breeze, Kirby reflected on the move and shared his thoughts on the restaurant’s journey and plans.
The Lazy Parrot has been a staple in Charlottesville for over two decades. “We’re going to celebrate our 21st year in May,” Kirby noted. “That’s a long time for an independent restaurant. We’ve won Best Wings in C’ville again, and we go by word of mouth. We sell more food than beer, wine, and liquor combined, but we do sell a lot of beer.”
Kirby emphasized the importance of maintaining reasonable prices. “Our prices are super reasonable. Retired people need a place for a good salad for lunch. It’s a little bit different from what people are used to here. We want year-round business from locals, so we focus on them. We offer an $8 lunch and have kept our prices the same for years. Happy hour food specials all day on Wednesdays, 45 beers on tap, and pizzas you’ll swear by. A one-topping pizza for $8, and any pint you want is $2.95.”
From day one, Kirby and his wife Angel have prioritized good food at good prices. “My motto from day one has been that my wife and I like good food at good prices. Other people can do what they want, but we do what we like. I like making a little every day. The most expensive thing in a restaurant is an empty seat. I don’t look at anything but people coming in. We offer specials at great prices, and if you have kids, it’s even better.”
The Lazy Parrot is designed to be a place where everyone can feel at home. “I have high-top tables because I want everybody eye to eye. If a server walks to the table, I want them to look you in the eye. There’s a good flow to it, everyone at eye level. I like a flow of socializing, people coming in and watching people. We’re bred that way. Admit your mistakes, and we’ll take care of it. If we make a mistake, we get to it before the customer.”
The Lazy Parrot also engages with the local community, particularly youth sports. “It’s all about youth sports. I’ve got kids working for me now whose parents were regulars when we first opened up. Everything we do is by hand—we cook our own chips, make our own dressings. We’re very hands-on and listen to our customers. We have our finger on the pulse and love suggestions from customers because they tell us what they are going to pay for.”
With the new location at Roundabout Plaza, The Lazy Parrot is set to bring its unique charm to Lake Anna. “The Lazy Parrot is a bright, safe, fun place for people to go and feel like they are welcome—a place for kids to come after a Friday night football game.”
