In recent months, theft incidents have posed significant challenges for small businesses in the Lake Anna community, prompting owners and managers to grapple with financial losses and security considerations. From stolen recreational equipment to targeted cash thefts, these crimes not only affect the financial stability of businesses but also disrupt the peace of mind of those involved.

Although Lake Anna Media Group is awaiting information from Spotsylvania and Louisa Counties regarding the incidences of theft, local sources have noted multiple attempts, some successful.

John Pettit Jr., co-owner at The Dry Dock, expressed frustration over the theft of two jet skis belonging to customers and a UTV in December of 2022. Despite promptly reporting the incidents to law enforcement, Pettit noted delays and limited follow-up from authorities. “It’s hard to believe it’s been over a year and still nothing,” Pettit remarked, underscoring the prolonged nature of the situation.

Although Pettit has upgraded their security equipment and measures, the situation continues to cause undue stress. “We lost our peace of mind,” he noted.

Similar concerns were shared by Lora Lamb, General Manager of Dickinson’s Store, who recounted two recent theft incidents at her establishment. In one case, thieves circumvented the security measures and disabled surveillance systems to steal cash from the premises. In another incident, a man made threats to store staff while attempting to steal merchandise. Although local law enforcement identified the suspect, he had relocated to Florida, leaving the case unresolved.

Despite these challenges, certain businesses have taken proactive steps to bolster security and deter potential thefts, implementing measures such as increased surveillance, fencing with barbed wire, and enhanced lighting. These initiatives, alongside vigilant inventory management, have helped mitigate losses and uphold a secure environment for staff and customers.

According to data from CrimeMapping.com, there have been three reported instances of larceny by the Spotsylvania County Sheriff within approximately 10 miles of Lake Anna since January 1st of this year. Additionally, a burglary was reported further away off Granite Springs Road.

Lake Anna Media Group has contacted both the Spotsylvania and Louisa County Sheriff’s offices for further information regarding thefts in the vicinity of the lake and is awaiting a response from their media contacts for additional insights.
