After 13 years of dedicated service in the Marine Corps, including three combat deployments, Jason Haag faced a daunting transition to civilian life. Like many veterans, he grappled with the invisible wounds of war, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, Haag’s journey took an unexpected turn towards healing thanks to a loyal companion named Axel.

Haag’s life changed forever when a machine gun injury during an Iraqi combat mission left him battling PTSD. In the midst of his struggles, Axel, a service dog, became his lifeline. “I hadn’t been a dog person, but I had a neighbor who had a service dog and said it works, so that started me on this crazy journey,” Haag shared.

The profound impact of Axel’s presence prompted Haag to embark on a mission to educate others about the transformative power of service dogs for veterans. He became a national spokesman for Canines for Warriors and later played a pivotal role in establishing the service dog arm of American Humane.

Determined to make a difference on his own terms, Haag co-founded Leashes of Valor, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing service dogs to veterans. “I wanted to do this myself,” Haag explained, highlighting his commitment to ensuring veterans receive the support they need.

Leashes of Valor operates with a unique approach, focusing on quality over quantity. The organization meticulously selects and trains service dogs, ensuring they meet rigorous standards before pairing them with veterans. Haag emphasized the importance of the bond between veterans and their service dogs, noting that it provides a sense of purpose and companionship crucial for healing.

Located in Spotsylvania County, Leashes of Valor offers a sanctuary for veterans seeking solace and support. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our veterans to heal. It’s an awesome opportunity,” Haag remarked, describing the tranquil environment at ‘Axel’s Place,’ the organization’s headquarters.

Despite the challenges he faces daily, Haag finds solace in the impact his work has on veterans and their families. “For every single dog we’ve given out, it’s saved that veteran’s life, that family’s life,” he stated passionately, highlighting the organization’s remarkable success in preventing veteran suicides.

As Leashes of Valor continues its mission, Haag remains dedicated to empowering veterans to seek help and support. “That’s always the first step,” he emphasized, underscoring the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health issues among veterans.

In an effort to raise awareness and funds for their cause, Leashes of Valor will be hosting several events, including “Mutts and Mimosas” on May 11th and a veterans tournament series. These events aim to foster community engagement and support for veterans in need.

As Haag and his team at Leashes of Valor continue their tireless efforts, they serve as beacons of hope for veterans navigating the challenges of post-military life. Through their dedication and compassion, they are not only saving lives but also transforming them for the better, one service dog at a time.
