Louisa County, Virginia – In a joint announcement by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS) and Louisa County Public Schools (LCPS), Superintendent J. Douglas “Doug” Straley II has been honored as the Region V Superintendent of the Year. This prestigious accolade, bestowed annually, recognizes exemplary leadership and commitment to excellence in the realm of public school division leadership.

Dr. Peter Gretz, Superintendent of Fluvanna County Public Schools and Chairperson for Region V at VASS, shared the excitement of regional superintendents in celebrating Doug Straley’s well-deserved recognition. Dr. Gretz lauded Mr. Straley’s dedication, knowledge, and advocacy for schools, students, and families.

“This awards process provides another opportunity to shine a light on our team here in Louisa County,” Mr. Straley expressed. “I feel extremely blessed every day when I come to work because I am surrounded by great people.”

This marks the second time Mr. Straley has received the esteemed award, having previously been honored in 2020. Known for his deep roots in Louisa County, Mr. Straley credited the accomplishment to the support of his community.

“I give all the credit to the amazing team and community that I get to work with every single day,” Mr. Straley emphasized.

As Superintendent, Mr. Straley has been instrumental in fostering a positive, team-centered culture within Louisa County Public Schools and the broader community. Initiatives such as the TeamLCPS MVP Awards and the LCPS #Kindness campaign underscore his commitment to collaboration and community service.

“Virginia, and our region, specifically, is fortunate to have such an exceptional educator and leader among us,” Dr. Gretz remarked.

Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Straley expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside outstanding individuals in Louisa County.

Mr. Straley resides in Louisa with his wife, Kate, who is a teacher at Louisa County Middle School, and their six children, all of whom attend or have graduated from Louisa County Public Schools. He holds a B.S. in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and an M.A. in K-12 Educational Leadership from Regent University.
