[Letter from the Editor] Full Throttle

That’s me, heart racing, looking all goofy as I sit in the water next to the hot boats listening to them rev their sexy engines… and off they go. This is the start of a jet boat obsession, I was thinking.

Don’t worry…I haven’t gone out and bought a jet boat (…yet), but it made me wonder, what is it about these remarkable machines that give people so much passion? So, I asked.

I asked the locals who had been in it for 25 years, what was in it for them. I asked the visitors, some of whom come as far as Massachusetts, what brought them back to the jet boat event year after year.
The answer surprised me.

“The people,” they said. Time and time again. “The built-in family.” “The camaraderie” and “All these people you see here that I trust to watch my daughter while I go full throttle.”

Which, by the way, is also a part of the adventure. Going “full throttle” depending on the size, weight, water conditions, and temperature all play a big part in how fast the boat is willing to go.

And it describes exactly how I felt at full speed going over 100mph in Chet Wojcik’s jet boat, at full throttle. With great speed and intensity, our skin moved out of the way as the boat went from 0 to 100 in only a moment, skimming across the water in a great display of enthusiasm.

Clutching to the seat as tight as you can, it wasn’t quite as scary as a roller coaster, and it was a whole lot more fun.

It’s not really an obsession with the machines themselves, but more of the idea that we can have it all. We can have unbreakable bonds, matched with great speed, intensity, and enthusiasm for life. That’s the jet boat obsession.
