Last year, Best of Lake Anna was criticized by some local leaders as being merely a “popularity contest.”
How can one cup of coffee be declared the best if you haven’t tried them all?
But, does that mean we shouldn’t celebrate an amazing cup of coffee just because someone else doesn’t like it as much?
And why shouldn’t we celebrate the best? The best real estate representatives, the best customer service, the best on-the-water hangout.
Studies show that competition among locally owned businesses strengthens the character and unique identity of a community. As our businesses contribute to the flavor of Lake Anna, we ensure it remains attractive and memorable. A strong local identity leads to increased tourism and greater support for our businesses.
That’s why the Best of Lake Anna Readers’ Choice Awards matters. It’s meant to inspire, to celebrate, and to bring culture to life in a young, growing community.
John Newby from The Telegraph put it well: “Competition fosters community engagement. When local businesses vie for customers, they often become more involved in community events, sponsorships, and initiatives. This engagement strengthens the bonds between businesses and residents, leading to a more vibrant and cohesive community.”
Popularity contest or not, no one can deny the importance of what we’re doing here.
You can tame the beast—or the beast will tame you.

Hi! I’m Jennifer Bailey and I partner with entrepreneurs who have massive ideas that could change the world. Most marketing is meaningless. Filled with empty promises, its only job is to bring in new traffic, new leads, and new customers. But I’ve drawn a line in the sand, and I’ve learned that marketing can do so much more than reach business goals and build profit. My methods give businesses the fire and soul they need to reach the right people, set the groundwork for sustainable relationships, and offer true value to the people on both the giving and receiving ends of marketing.
