Wanna Go For a Ride?

And one of my favorite capabilities of my Tesla is a functionality called “dog mode“. If you are not familiar with DogMode, it is a setting on the tesla that keeps the car at a perfect temperature so that you can leave your dog in the car while running errands, etc.. dark mode displays on the large Tesla screen, so any passerby’s can see a message, proclaiming that the driver will be right back, and the car is at the perfect temperature. (This keeps people from breaking windows to save your pet)..

A dog motors pretty sophisticated. It takes advantage of the unique heat pump system for heat and air conditioning that is built into the Tesla. While the heat and air conditioning is very efficient, it does wear on the battery just a little bit. If for any reason, the battery is down to 20% total charge, pet mode will send the driver a message saying you should probably come get in the car and recharge.

Recently, Tesla improved dog mode by allowing the driver to remotely view the inside of the car through a camera mounted just under the rearview mirror. This allows the driver to keep an ion, his or her pet and return to the car should the pet appear to be restless.

We have a really grown to enjoy pet mode. Short errands to the grocery store, post office, etc. do not have to be made it alone. Our dog can jump in the car, enjoy the ride, and then take a nap while we attend to whatever chores need to be done. At least, as far as our dog is concerned, he would rather be with us in the car than left home alone.

While on long trips (See Retire LKA – page x) away from home, we love that dog mode allows us to enjoy a meal in a restaurant while keeping a close on our dog who is enjoying a perfect, 72° temperature. Of course, he likes it if we bring a little doggie bag afterward.

And while other manufacturers are experimenting with their version of dog mode, it’s really only applicable to an electric vehicle as it requires a large battery to maintain the temperature in a car.

Since my wife and I both drive electric, for us, it’s much more common these days for our dog to hear hear, “Wanna go for a ride?”
